![]() Background The initiative to organize this symposium in Madrid came in order to continue the International Symposium on Tunnel Safety & Security (TSS) held in Washington, DC USA, in November 2004. The importance of the tunnels in the network infrastructure as well as the challenges posed in terms of prevention, fire and safety response to disasters and sabotage, is the essential purpose of this meeting. The 2nd International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Vulnerability was held in the city of Madrid, Spain, between 15 and 17 March 2006. This meeting gave an opportunity for experts from the world of transport, especially for infrastructure security systems, manufacturers and specialized agencies in the protection against sabotage to present their experiences at internacional.La tunnel safety is a challenge and a point priority attention to the private and public sector to ensure public safety. The exhibition was organized in parallel to the symposium allowed all parties involved in the design, construction, maintenance and protection of tunnels, present their products and services and technological developments, providing an excellent opportunity for business contacts. The continued participation of SP in over 30 European projects, guarantee its experience in international research programs. Center for Infrastructure Expertise is part of the National Infrastructure Institute (NI2) in the U.S., an institution dedicated to research technological solutions for improving the management and protection of infrastructure in the U.S.. An essential part of their work is to assist government agencies in developing and implementing creative technology solutions for the protection of national infrastructure from terrorist attacks and disasters. Coordination among government agencies and the private sector is the basis for ensuring the safety of infrastructure at risk. The Technical Road Association (In short, ATC or ATC-Spanish PIARC), non-profit organization, aims, among others: Provide a forum neutral, objective and independent, in which road administrations in different areas (the State, the Autonomous Communities, Provinces and Municipalities), agencies and public and private entities, businesses and technicians concerned individually on the roads in Spain, to discuss freely all the technical, economic and social issues related to roads and road use, exchange technical information and coordinate actions, propose legislation, etc. The promotion, study and sponsoring initiatives that lead to the improvement of roads and road use, as well as the improvement and extension of the techniques associated with the approach, design, construction, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of roads and roads.
